At the Oct. 2 meeting of the Board of Trustees, Viera announced his intention to leave the college in June 2008.
All the constituents of the Citrus College community have since been asked to weigh in on qualities they would like to see in the next college president.
These stakeholders include members of the Faculty Association, classified staff, the Associated Students of Citrus College, administrators, Academic Senate, the Alumni Association and the community at large, as well as the students themselves.
Now is our chance to articulate the qualities we want our next college president to possess.
Teaching experience is extremely important.
We want a leader with a proven track record in higher education and in the classroom.
Accessibility is also crucial. A president who listens and relates to the students and faculty will greatly facilitate open communication.
We want a person who has a vision for Citrus College. Will he or she think "outside of the box," constantly moving forward to meet challenges of the 21st century? We need someone who is not afraid of the ever-changing world students face.
We need someone who has our best interests in mind. With the advances in technology, as well as in teaching methodology, we need a leader with the courage to implement change.
We need a president who can inspire others to participate in positive teamwork. Can he or she motivate staff and faculty to work together for the benefit of all? Being a good leader results in others wanting to strive for greatness.
The next president must be willing to listen to students before taking action. We want this person to have charisma, to be a "people person," to be someone we can approach. This person should be diplomatic and unbiased when making difficult decisions.
The next president must also respect the autonomy of the student press. We want someone who stands for freedom of speech and who will respect the Clarion staff.
The job of superintendent/president is the most important position on our campus. This person makes decisions that affect all of us. Our campus community deserves the best. Contact your search committee representative today with input on the ideal candidate to lead Citrus College.
